The role of PVC lead salt stabilizer

The role of PVC lead salt stabilizer

PVC lead salt stabilizer is a commonly used thermal stabilizer in the processing of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which mainly inhibits material thermal degradation by absorbing hydrogen chloride produced by PVC decomposition and replacing unstable chlorine atoms. Its application characteristics are as follows:
Main application areas: opaque hard PVC products
Lead salt stabilizers are widely used in the production of opaque and hard PVC products such as wires and cables, pipes, and profiles due to their high cost-effectiveness and good thermal stability. Its electrical insulation is excellent, especially suitable for industrial scenes that do not require high transparency.
The advantages of composite lead salt stabilizers: Composite lead salt stabilizers use symbiotic reaction technology to melt lead salt with lubricants, forming a granular dust-free system, improving dispersibility and reducing dust pollution, becoming a dust-free solution for the PVC industry. This type of product can improve material flowability and product appearance in the processing of hard PVC pipes, sheets, and other materials.
Limitations and Alternative Trends
Toxicity limitation: The characteristic of containing heavy metal lead imposes strict restrictions on its use in areas with high hygiene requirements such as food packaging and medical devices.
Environmental substitution: With the tightening of environmental regulations (such as China’s restriction on the use of lead salt stabilizers in PVC building materials since 2012), environmentally friendly stabilizers such as organotin and calcium zinc have gradually become alternative choices.
Special process limitation: Lead salt stabilizers can interfere with the performance of ADC foaming agents, so they are not suitable for the production of PVC synthetic leather that requires foaming processing.
Common Types and Composite Applications
Monomeric lead salts: such as trisodium lead sulfate (with the best thermal stability), dibasic lead phosphite (with antioxidant function), etc.
Composite system: 2-3 types of lead salts are commonly used in actual production to balance thermal stability, processing performance, and cost. Composite stabilizers continue to be applied in certain fields through optimized formulations (containing 20% -60% lead) and processes.
