What are PVC additives?

There are various types of additives for PVC (polyvinyl chloride), which can be divided into the following categories based on their functions, with common specific ingredients and uses attached:

1. Heat stabilizer

Function: To prevent the release of HCl due to thermal decomposition during PVC processing or use.

Common types:

Lead salts (such as trisodium lead sulfate): Low cost but high toxicity, gradually phased out.

Calcium zinc stabilizer: environmentally friendly, used for food packaging and medical devices.

Organic tin compounds (such as dibutyltin) have good transparency and are suitable for medical products.

Rare earth stabilizer: a new environmentally friendly alternative.

2. Plasticizers

Function: Increase flexibility and lower glass transition temperature.

Common types:

Phthalates (such as DOP, DBP): Universal, partially limited in toxicity (such as DEHP).

Environmentally friendly alternatives: Citrate esters (ATBC), epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), polyester plasticizers.

3. Lubricants

Function: Reduce machining friction and improve fluidity.

Category:

Internal lubricants (such as stearic acid): reduce intermolecular friction of PVC.

External lubricants (such as paraffin): reduce friction between PVC and equipment.

4. Impact modifier

Function: Improve impact resistance.

Common types:

CPE (Chlorinated Polyethylene): High cost-effectiveness.

MBS (methyl methacrylate butadiene styrene copolymer): suitable for transparent products.

ACR (acrylic ester): Excellent comprehensive performance.

5. Processing aids

Function: Improve melt strength and flowability.

Common types: ACR (such as Paraloid series), EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer).

6. Flame retardants

Function: Inhibit combustion, used in building materials, wires and cables.

Type:

Inorganic materials: aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide (environmentally friendly but with a large amount of additives).

Organic compounds: Bromine compounds (such as decabromodiphenyl ether, partially restricted), phosphorus compounds (such as phosphate esters).

7. Light stabilizer

Function: Anti UV aging, used for outdoor products.

Common types:

UV absorbers (such as benzotriazoles).

Hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS).

8. Fillers

Function: Reduce costs and regulate performance.

Examples: Calcium carbonate (light calcium/heavy calcium), talc powder, and wollastonite.

9. Colorants

Type:

Organic pigments: brightly colored.

Inorganic pigments: good weather resistance.
